Embracing Colors: A Journey of Understanding and Unity

Between February 19th and March 1st, 2020 the picturesque landscapes of Slanic-Moldova, Romania, became the place for a transformative Youth exchange titled “Embrace the Colors.” The initiative brought together 55 participants from 10 different countries, sponsored by the Erasmus+. Association of Ruse in help of society and young people was represented by four young participants and one leader.

The project delved into themes not only related to anti-gypsyism worldwide but discrimination as a whole. Participants explored the history of the Roma, discovering that they have a flag and that February 20th marks the day when the Roma in Romania were liberated from slavery in 1856. The project also shed light on well-known actors and singers worldwide with Roma roots, challenging common misconceptions. Additionally, it highlighted the fact that, like the Jewish population, the Roma were victims of the Holocaust.

A standout event during the project was the participation of all attendees in a Forum Theatre, where, through interactive play, participants aimed to raise awareness among students in Ploiesti, Romania, about common situations of discrimination against the Roma population.

The dynamic exchange of ideas, cultural insights, and personal stories fostered a rich tapestry of understanding and unity among the diverse group of participants. The immersive experience allowed everyone to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and build bridges of empathy.

“Embrace the Colors” was not just a youth exchange; it was a vibrant celebration of diversity, where participants painted a collective vision of a world free from discrimination. The project served as a reminder that learning from one another’s stories and experiences can be a powerful catalyst for positive change.

RAPO expresses gratitude to ADA and all participants for contributing to this meaningful initiative, making “Embrace the Colors” a truly transformative experience that transcends borders and fosters a spirit of global understanding and acceptance.
